5 quick checks that indicate your roof needs help

The roof of your house is vital for maintaining a healthy home. We understand that not everyone can undertake frequent inspections, so here are 5 quick and easy checks you can do at home now, to avoid costly roof repairs in the future.

Cracked and broken tiles

Broken or damaged roof tiles can put your home at risk of water damage, mould, and wood rot, turning into a very expensive job to fix. While it will be difficult to see the minor tile chips from the ground, if a missing or broken tile is spotted, it should be replaced immediately. The majority of the time, checking your roof is reactive, however, it should be a regular proactive activity, especially with the extreme weather we’re having in Queensland!

Sagging Ceiling

If you see bubbles forming on your ceiling and the roof is visibly beginning to sag, take it as an alert to get a roof inspection as soon as possible. Roof leaks won’t always make it through your ceiling, in fact, they are likely to pool up, hold the weight and sag your ceiling. More often than not, damage can be due to flawed construction, bad home design or poor-quality materials. If your roof looks like this, take action before your ceiling caves in!

Clogged Gutters

Gutters play a more important role than you think! Your gutters control where the water runs after it leaves your roof. If your gutter is full of debris, where is the water going to go? Clogged gutters can lead to excess water collection and eventually even pull away from your home due to heaviness and saturation.  You’ll be able to tell if water is spilling over the sides of your gutters like a waterfall, or you notice lots of birds by your roof (as they’re likely making a nest). You can clean your gutters yourself however getting on a ladder is always a risk so it’s best to leave it to the professionals at KWR Roofing

Signs of Moisture

Look up! If your ceiling has dark spots or streaks, there is a leak somewhere in your roof. If the roof isn’t properly maintained, then the inside of your home is left compromised. The faster you respond to a water stain, the easier it’ll be to repair. Especially if your stains are yellow or green in colour, it’s likely you have mould growing in that area, which if left for long periods of time can be dangerous!

Moss Growth

Untreated moss left to grow on your roof can cause more damage than you think. If your home is situated under shady trees, you’re at higher risk of moss spreading. Typically, as moss grows thicker and covers cracks in your tiles like a blanket, tiles then force themselves apart which creates gaps in the roof – this inevitably lets water in.
