December is here which means Christmas is just around the corner! Are you planning on spreading the Christmas cheer with some good old fashioned Christmas lights? It’s important to make sure you minimise the risk of an accident to you or your roof. We’ve put together our top tips to keep in mind before you climb that ladder.

Clear your gutters

When hanging lights near or on your gutter, ensure there is nothing that could become a fire hazard. A common cause of house fires is bulbs getting too close to dried leaves and debris that may be blocking your gutters.

Secure your lights

Don’t use nails, screws, or staples to attach your exterior lights to your roof. This will cause permanent damage to your roof, leaving you with a hefty repair bill! Instead use insulated hooks which can reduce fire risks due to heat and frayed wires.

Watch your step

Once you are on your roof, avoid walking around as much as possible. One loose tile can be a major slipping hazard, especially during storm season. Keep in mind that tiles can also break under your feet which can result in leaks and moisture seeping into your ceiling.

There are plenty of other options for transforming your house into a festive masterpiece without having to climb your roof. Have you considered lawn decorations for the front yard instead? It can look equally as festive and will save you the hassle of climbing up on the roof and risking injury or roof damage.
