With the summer storm season on the way, it is a great prompt to check your gutters and downpipes.

If you have rusty holes or loose gutters or downpipes, now is the time to get them repaired or replaced before heavy rain or storms create more damage to your property with problematic water run-off.

Prevention is always better than a cure. Even if your gutters and drains are currently intact, having a build-up of debris in your gutters with an onslaught of heavy rain and storms can cause damage to your gutters and downpipes, and to your property.

Here are 4 quick and easy steps to ensure your roof water run-off is efficient and free-flowing, and won’t damage your property:

 1. Take a tour

Take a quick tour of the perimeter of your building to spot any major holes in the guttering. Look for rust that weakens the guttering – this can quickly become a hole. Also look for any cracks or splits in guttering and downpipes.

2. Is the water flowing correctly?

Check for any water remaining in the gutters rather than flowing towards the downpipes. It is also a good idea to give the downpipes a gentle shake to check they are attached to the guttering at the top of the pipe, and at the exit of the pipe. Are the gutters sagging or pulling away from the building? If so, this can cause incorrect downpipe positioning.

3. Investigate

Grab some gloves and a gardening tool and check the exit points of downpipes for debris. If you have gutter-guard, is it intact and working properly? Check the path of where the water flows for any other debris that could deviate water flow from the correct run-off path.

4. Take a closer look

If it is safe for you to do so, use a ladder to take a closer look at the flashing, gutters, and gutter-guards for any holes and damage, or any water that isn’t draining and clearing your gutters of debris.

FAST FACTS: Gutters and Downpipes
  1. The best time to check if your gutters and downpipes are in good working order is during the rain. Grab your umbrella & spot any leaks or problematic run-off.
  2. Gutters and downpipes have a lifespan of 50 to 100 years if installed correctly and maintained.
  3. Gutters and downpipes should be checked & cleared of debris 4 times a year and more often in storm season!
  4. Water pooling in gutters indicates the fall of the gutter isn’t directing water flow efficiently to downpipes.
